COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANT
Reporting to the General Manager the Communications Assistant will develop plans and lead specific initiatives that are focused on internal and external communication for the organization. Initiatives will include, but are not limited to, enhancing CAREA’s profile with staff, our members, the general public, government, industry and the community.
Responsibilities of the Communications Assistant will also include, but will not be limited to the following:
- Developing awareness campaigns,
- Maintaining and updating the internal and external company website,
- Developing and carrying out communications, including advertisements, news articles, and press releases with local media,
- Managing the photo library and coordinating photo opportunities,
- Developing and implementing an effective community relations strategy to demonstrate the role that CAREA plays in the communities in which we operate to increase our visibility,
- Writing articles for the monthly newsletter,
- Assisting with the planning and execution of CAREA’s Annual General Meeting,
- Assisting with the planning and execution of CAREA’s information sessions,
- Organizing and managing employee events,and
- Planning, coordinating, writing, and editing monthly staff communication,
As the ideal candidate, your background will include:
- Post secondary education, preferably in Communications. Equivalent experience will be considered.
- A minimum of 2 years experience in communications or related field.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Alberta driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
- Highly developed written and verbal communications and presentation skills.
- Skilled in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Corel Draw.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective business relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders.
- Understanding of government organizational structure and functioning.
- Skillful at teamwork and developing consensus.
- The ability to organize, and coordinate projects including setting priorities and meeting deadlines with minimum direction

Journeyman Power Lineperson (Innisfail Alberta)
Responsibilities of the Journeyman Power Lineperson could include, but will not be limited to the following:
Inspection and Patrols
- Conducting patrol of lines, right-of-ways, and underground installations.
- Conducting inspections of rural substations, including auto booster and regulator installations, resetting targets and investigating failures, as required.
- Collecting periodic samples of transformer and regulator oil, as required, and arranging for appropriate lab testing and disposal.
- Conducting load and voltage readings, as required.
- Conducting periodic inspections of radio equipment and arranging any emergency radio repairs from Telecom personnel.
Construction Overhead(Duties involving climbing)
- To string, sag, armor and tie in conductors.
- To frame poles aloft and install bus work.
- To connect grounds, both primary and secondary.
- To install lightning arrestors and switches.
- To check oil levels in transformers, oil circuit breakers and regulators. Add or replace oil as needed.
- To install and connect regulators, oil circuit breakers and transformers.
- To test and repair system grounds.
- To obtain samples from transformers to check for PCBs.
Construction Underground
Preparing foundations for, and in the erection of totally enclosed ground substations, and when assigned, directing the work of contractors hired for projects of this kind.
- Installing A, B, and C ground connectors of all types.
- Splicing tension and non-tension conductors of all types.
- Framing poles on the ground, digging holes, setting poles and anchors.
- Ensuring proper connection of stand-by generators.
- Ensuring there is no conflict between R.E.A. system and other utilities or customer facilities.
Underground (Circuits up to and including 25kv)
- To supervise and backfill trench.
- To string primary, secondary and occasionally communication cable.
- To build stress cone splices and to connect underground transformers both primary and secondary.
- To terminate conductors, phase out, and primary conductors and install switching cubicles.
- To switch in cubicles and transformers and to install riserways and disconnects.
- To energize line and check transformers and breaker cabinets.
Salvage Of Distribution Overhead And Underground Facilities
- Dismantling structures and salvaging re-useable materials, equipment and apparatus.
- Returning re-useable materials, equipment and apparatus to material stock or repair depots in line with standard practice.
Trouble Calls
- To test and replace damaged equipment or apparatus that cannot be repaired on-site.
- To perform distribution systems maintenance duties such as replacing poles and transformers following an interruption.
- To trouble shoot and repair underground systems.
- To investigate trouble with the operation of distribution equipment and apparatus and to effect repairs as required.
- To test and replace damaged equipment or apparatus that cannot be repaired on-site.
Maintenance
- Arranging for clearance and interruptions of service with service staff and providing visual clearance of re-closures, when assigned.
- Conducting routine visual tests on new transformers and regulators and on units taken out of service for repair or for installation at another site.
- Assisting in the testing and adjusting of switches and regulators.
